The short answer: Yes, but only in small amounts.
The long answer: Lentils are legumes, which belong to the same family as peas, peanuts, and garbanzo beans. They appear as lens-shaped beans and come in different colours such as green, black, brown, red, and orange. Lentils are known for being high in plant-based protein (next to soybeans), fiber, calcium, folate, iron, phosphorus, and potassium.
Generally speaking, cooked lentils are okay for cat consumption as long as she is not allergic or intolerant to this type of legume. However, your cat should only be given limited amounts of lentils because they are difficult to digest. Aside from that, too much lentils may cause gas, stomach cramping, or diarrhea.
How to feed lentils to your cat: Never feed your cat raw or undercooked lentils. The lectins found on the outer covering of your seeds may cause health-related problems. Nausea, diarrhea, lethargy, vomiting, abdominal pain, bloating, and hemorrhagic gastroenteritis are common side effects of eating raw lentils.
Unlike other beans, there’s no need to pre-soak lentils. Rinse and remove damaged seeds, then boil them in plain water for five to 20 minutes or until soft enough to chew. Refrain from mixing salt, sugar, onion, garlic, and other flavourings with the lentils. Aside from being toxic ingredients, they do not provide the nutrients your cat needs.
In summary: Lentils are low-calorie treats that your cat can eat once in a while and in small quantities. Though cats do not need some of the nutrients that lentils provide, they can occasionally enjoy the taste and texture of these round beans.
