Can Dogs Eat Avocados?

The short answer: No.

The long answer: The different parts of an avocado—namely its leaves, skin, and flesh—contain an antifungal compound called persin, which can cause vomiting, diarrhea, or even pancreatitis in extreme cases. Aside from this toxic component, another part to be wary of is the avocado pit. More than just being a choking hazard, this indigestible pit may cause intestinal blockage if your dog accidentally ingests it.

In summary: Avocados may be filled with vitamins, fatty acids, and antioxidants, but they’re better off being consumed by humans instead of dogs. Keep the fruit away from curious pets by carefully disposing avocado-laden meal leftovers. Discover which fruits dogs can safely eat in our “can dogs eat” category.
