Can Cats Eat Honey?

The long answer: Your cat’s diet should consist of a high amount of protein, a moderate amount of fat, and a low amount of carbohydrates – especially if she is an indoor cat. Honey is not included in her dietary needs, so you should not feed it to her. Since her digestive system is short, she may not be able to digest honey properly. Plus, consuming it may cause an upset stomach, diarrhea, or vomiting. Feeding her honey regularly can also lead to obesity and other complications.

Some veterinarians might recommend honey to cure your cat’s throat inflammation, sore throat, intestinal tract inflammation, or ulcer. It could even help suppress her allergies. However, honey should only be given to her in small amounts (about half a teaspoon diluted in water) as prescribed by her doctor.

Due to the botulism spores found in it, raw honey should not be served to diabetic cats or those with compromised immune systems.

What to do if your cat accidentally eats honey: Honey is not lethal for cats, so a small amount should not affect her. Observe her for signs of stomach upset, vomiting, and diarrhea, and call your veterinarian if she manifests these symptoms.

In summary: Honey is high in glucose and fructose, making it difficult for cats to digest it. Even if it is rich in antioxidants and nutrients, you’re better off skipping this human food and finding other healthier treats to give your cat. Discover which human food cats can safely consume in our “can cats eat” category.
