Is Revlon Cruelty Free?

The short answer: No, Revlon is not entirely cruelty free.

The long answer: Founded in March 1932, Revlon, Inc. is a corporation that develops, manufactures, and markets cosmetics, skin care, fragrance, and personal care items. On its official website, it states that “Revlon does not conduct animal testing and has not done so for decades. We comprehensively test all of our products using the most technologically advanced methods available to ensure they are both innovative and safe to use.”

Revlon continues, “We believe that all women should have the opportunity to express themselves through makeup and we sell our products in many markets around the world. Regulatory authorities in some countries conduct independent testing in order to satisfy their own mandatory registration requirements and a limited number of these countries have not yet adopted alternative testing methods.” In layman’s terms, Revlon allows countries such as China to test their products on animals, so that the brand can be authorised to sell its products in that lucrative market.

The American beauty brand once belonged to the list of cruelty-free brands proudly endorsed by PETA. But in 2012, Revlon received the ire of PETA when they failed to disclose that they were already selling their products in China. To this day, Revlon still sells its products in mainland China, thus allowing authorised parties to test their items on animals.
