The short answer: No, Cetaphil is not entirely cruelty free.
The long answer: Owned by independent global dermatology company Galderma, Cetaphil is a “gentle and effective skincare line for face, body, and baby.” It specialises in treating sensitive, dry, and acne-prone skin types. On its US website, Cetaphil states that they do not test any of their products on animals. However, they fail to mention if their suppliers test their raw materials, or if they commission third parties to test on their (or their suppliers’) behalf.
When you do a quick search online, you’ll discover that Cetaphil is being sold in mainland China. This means that Cetaphil must follow China’s rules and regulations before their products can be sold there. Animal testing is one of the country’s mandatory requirements. It allows health officials to continuously do local tests on animals using Cetaphil products, guaranteeing they are safe for Chinese consumers. Because its products are currently sold in China, Cetaphil cannot claim to be a cruelty free brand.
