Is Clarins Cruelty Free?

The short answer: No, Clarins is not completely cruelty free.

The long answer: Founded in 1954 by Jacques Courtin, Clarins is a French luxury skin care, cosmetics, and perfume company owned by the Clarins Group. It sells its products all over the world, including countries such as China that still run product tests on animals.

In 2019, they released their first vegan skin care range called My Clarins. The brand explains on their UK website: “Through the My Clarins products’ ‘Vegan Friendly’ label, Clarins is guaranteeing that you are buying cosmetic products that do not contain any animal-derived raw materials, and have not been tested on animals, as they are not sold in countries where animal testing is mandatory.”

Clarins also claims to be committed to working towards eradicating animal testing globally. It states, “Clarins Research uses cutting-edge safety testing methods that do not involve animals to provide its consumers with premium products of the highest quality… This is why Clarins Research is continuing to invest in scientific research in order to promote complete acceptance of non-animal testing methods, by working closely with international authorities in the field.”

Despite their efforts in releasing a vegan-friendly range and developing alternative testing methods, the fact remains that Clarins sells most of its products in China. The brand is aware that their products must undergo mandatory animal testing to enter the market and continue being sold in the country.
