Can Cats Eat Avocado?

The short answer: No.

The long answer: Similar to dogs, cats should not be eating avocados on a regular basis. Avocado is a fruit that contains the antifungal compound persin, which can be found on its skin, flesh, and leaves. When ingested, the toxin can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and pancreatitis due to its high fat content.

Another cause for concern is the avocado pit, which can be a choking hazard for your cat. When fragments of this seed are accidentally ingested, they can create blocks in your cat’s esophagus, stomach, and/or intestine.

What to do if your cat accidentally eats avocado: Observe your cat for any changes. If she only ate a small serving of the flesh, she should be okay. If she starts to vomit, experiences the runs, or becomes lethargic, contact your vet immediately.

In summary: Though avocados are considered as mildly toxic for cats, it is advisable not to feed the fruit to your kitty at all times. Be sure to dispose of the fruit’s skin, pit, and leftover flesh carefully, so your cat doesn’t get tempted to taste them.
