Can Dogs Eat Green Peppers?

The short answer: Yes, but only occasionally and in small amounts.

The long answer: Green peppers are unripe bell peppers that were harvested before they got the chance to turn yellow, orange, and/or red. Safe for dogs to consume, these slightly bitter tasting fruits are packed with thiamin, niacin, folate, magnesium, copper, potassium, manganese, and vitamins A, C, K, and B6. These all work together to help with your dog’s digestion, immunity, and circulation, and at the same time, reduce inflammation and flatulence.

How to feed green peppers to your dog: Serve the green peppers either raw or lightly sautéed without any seasonings. But first, wash your bell peppers then remove the stem, seeds, core, and rotten parts. Slice the green pepper into bite-sized pieces that are small enough for your pet to eat.

Be sure not to serve your dog spicy green peppers because these are not safe for him. He may end up having mild to severe digestive problems from consuming them. If he accidentally eats spicy green peppers, observe for symptoms of nausea, vomiting, dehydration, and upset stomach. Similarly, limit your dog’s intake of green peppers because too much of them may result in vomiting and the runs.

Here are three ideas for green pepper treats your dog will love:

  1. Puree or cook the green pepper without any seasonings and give it to him as a snack.
  2. Make nutritious dog treats with green peppers, chicken, carrots, eggs, yogurt, and olive oil.
  3. Chop three slices of green peppers. Add them as toppings to your dog’s meal.

In summary: Low in calories and high in nutrients, green peppers are great treats for your pooch to have. As long as your pet enjoys its crunchy texture and slightly bitter taste and isn’t allergic to nightshade plants, you can let him eat this type of pepper occasionally. A small dog can eat about 1 to 3 small slices of green pepper a day, while a big dog can half a piece of green pepper.
