The short answer: Avon is not yet certified as cruelty free.
The long answer: Founded in 1886 by David H. McConnell, Avon is a multi-level marketing company that sells beauty, household, and personal care products. It is sold globally in over 100 countries, and in 2019, the company claimed that they became “the first global beauty company selling in China to stop all animal testing of ingredients and across all its brands.”
Avon says, “Our goal is to deliver products to meet our customers’ needs without compromising our commitment to animal welfare, our high product safety standards, or our adherence to regulatory requirements. By investing in how we develop innovation for China and in some cases changing distribution channels, we have been able to deliver this landmark change. Globally, none of our products will be tested on animals.” Furthermore, the brand stated that they reformulated some of their products and changed other ranges, so that these products don’t need to undergo animal testing in China.
Though Avon continues to work towards meaningful positive change against animal testing, the brand has not yet received cruelty-free certification. PETA has only added Avon to its “working for regulatory change” list, but not on its Beauty Without Bunnies program. PETA states, “This company is working toward regulatory changes to reduce the number of animals used for testing.” Similarly, Avon is not founded in Leaping Bunny’s list of cruelty-free brands.
