The short answer: No, Biotherm is not cruelty free.
The long answer: A French skin care brand, Biotherm is a portmanteau of bio (which is short for biologist) and therm (which pertains to thermal plankton). Thermal plankton is an ingredient found in all of Biotherm’s skincare products. It was originally discovered by biologist Dr. Jos Jullien in the thermal spring waters flowing under Pyrenees mountain.
Established in 1952, Biotherm was purchased by L’Oréal’s Luxury Products division in 1970. Upon checking its US website, Biotherm does not state their animal testing policy on their FAQs page. They also do not have any cruelty free certifications from Leaping Bunnies and PETA, with the latter claiming them as a brand that tests on animals.
Just like its sister brands Vichy Laboratories and La Roche Posay, Biotherm is also sold in China. This means that the beauty line is subject to the country’s mandatory animal testing laws. Chinese health officials and third parties may do random tests before or after Biotherm products are launched in the market.
Because of these facts, Biotherm cannot be considered cruelty free.
